January 2013 Archives

Georgia tax return season has begun

And so it begins. Tax season that is. January 30 marked the date that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting income tax returns. While April 15 is the deadline for most individual tax returns, if you expect to receive a tax refund, the sooner you file your return, the sooner you can expect the refund. The Georgia Department of Revenue has noted that using an electronic filing will result in a quicker refund.

Amazon not collecting sales tax in Georgia

Georgia's new online retailers tax law went into effect on January 1, but according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Amazon, the largest online retailer in the world, is not collecting sales tax on purchases made by Georgia customers. The state had expected the new law to generate $16 million a year in new tax revenue.

IRS tax refunds slow for victims of identity theft

The recent report from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) finds that victims of identity theft have to wait 180 days or more for their tax refund. The TAS notes it may be an even longer wait next year and called this long delay "unacceptable." The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) attributed part of the delay to the need to process internal paperwork before it pays the refund.

Tax fraud or evasion can mean prison time

A Georgia couple from Lawrenceville was sentenced to four years and three months in federal prison for failing to pay taxes for a decade. They had claimed they were exempt from paying federal taxes. The IRS did not share their opinion and neither did the federal district court that found them guilty of tax evasion.
