Local tax commissioner shares inside scoop on property taxes

As Georgia property owners know, property tax bills contain a lot of information. Trying to sift through all of that jargon can be challenging and a bit overwhelming. IRS instates tax on automatic tips at restaurants

Anyone in Atlanta who works as a waiter knows how difficult it can be to get by. Waiters work late hours, deal with ornery customers and make less than minimum wage. They are expected to be friendly and courteous to earn tips that will allow them to make rent that month. For waiters, tips are extremely important. They are not taxed, and waiters get to bring them home at the end of their shifts rather than waiting two weeks for a paycheck. Unfortunately, the Internal Revenue Service has decided to take this away from them.

Taxes for same sex couples in Georgia could be confusing

The U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in U.S. v. Windsor struck down key provisions in the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage for federal tax purposes as one man and one woman. The decision essentially allowed same-sex couples across the United States to file tax returns as married couples and take advantage of the various tax benefits afforded to them.
