IRS: Small businesses get audited more because they cheat more

We have discussed in a past blog post what to do if your small business is being audited. There are several ways to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible. However, we did not mention why you might be getting audited in the first place.

Some Atlanta business owners may be surprised to hear that the Internal Revenue Service has pinpointed small businesses as good business for audits. That's right, according to an article in Bloomberg, the IRS likes to go after small businesses because, according to them, they are more likely to be breaking the law.

According to IRS lawyers, large businesses are more likely to follow the rules than small businesses. In their own words, "... larger entities ... are maybe going to make more of an effort to do things right."

While some small business owners in Georgia may be offended by these comments, it is important to recognize that the IRS will continue to audit small businesses. In general, those who are self-employed should be aware that they may be more likely to be targeted by the IRS because most people seem to think that they have more opportunity to evade taxes than others.

Filing taxes for your small business is never easy. Sometimes people make mistakes, which can alert the IRS. However, the IRS is not infallible, as we have learned in the last few months. Just because they say you cheated on your taxes, does not mean you did. Working with the IRS can be intimidating, though, so many people find it helpful to work with an attorney as well.
