IRS warns of phone scam during tax season

Nobody in Atlanta enjoys dealing with the Internal Revenue Service. Contact with the IRS usually means that they think you owe them money, and often they will go to any length to get it. If you get a call from the IRS this tax season, however, it may not be what you think.

Recently, the IRS warned taxpayers of a scam it has become aware of. According to a report from a CBS affiliate, scammers have been calling taxpayers pretending to be IRS agents.

One couple in Pennsylvania said they were sure a call they received from a man who claimed to be an IRS agent was a scam because the IRS had no reason to be calling. They tried to call the man back, but he did not answer. They later confirmed with the IRS that the man was not an IRS agent.

According to the IRS, one way to tell if you are being scammed is whether you received a letter in the mail prior to a phone call. The IRS says that in nearly every situation it will mail a letter before making a phone call.

If you have received phone calls from people claiming to be IRS employees, it may be wise to contact the IRS and determine if the caller was actually an agent. If you have no reason to believe the IRS would be calling, do not give the caller any information. Hopefully authorities will track down the scammers soon, so no one in Atlanta or elsewhere will be taken advantage of.
